KPYC SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: Single Race FUN events

Note that the races for which hese Instructions are applicable are intended to be ³fun² in nature and are expected to be raced with al competitors attention to the prinicipals of good sportsmanship and seamanship. All competitors are expected to take their own finish times in the absence of a committee boat and to be aware of and supportive of other sailors who may have less experience than they do.

1            RULES

These races will be governed by the rules as defined in the current Racing Rules of Sailing and modified by the USSAILING prescriptions.

2            ENTRIES

Competitors may enter by simply showing up at the ³2KR² at approximately 1200 on Saturdays as scheduled in KPYC calendar.

3            NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at the Kittery Point Yacht Club, posted on the website www.kpyc.net and sent by email to the membership list. Modifications to the notice can be made by broadcast before the start on channel 68 VHF.

4            SIGNALS MADE ASHORE

Since the various mooring areas are not within site of the clubhouse there will be no visible flags or other signals made ashore.

5            SCHEDULE

The warning signal for the race will be effective at 1155 by GPS indicated Eastern Daylight time.

6            Classes and Class Flags

Unless otherwise posted and announced there will be a single class start.

7            RACING AREA

The racing area will be the Gulf of Maine, typically with the start and finish at buoy ³2KR² and other marks as noted in the coastal area. Note that this area has strong tidal and river currents, shoals and other normal hazards to navigation. Since the Port of Portsmouth is a busy commercial port with a Naval shipyard and Coast Guard Station there is significant shipping and commercial traffic and occasional military traffice that will be using the channel. All deep draft traffic will have the right of way as defined in the rules of the road.

8            COURSES and MARKS

The course[s] will be defined using government buoys usually a start from ³2KR² and a triangle, first to either Gunboat Shoals and/or Isle of Shoals and finish at 2KR. First weather mark will be the better choice for an upwind start and will be by consensus of fleet on channel 68 VHF. Alternative government marks in the general area may be used and will be noted by notice to competitors.

9            STARTING AND FINISHING LINES, Starting system.

The starting and finishing lines will be abeam of the buoy 2KR and between it and the committee boat if there is one. In the absence of a committee boat all competitors will start from a line abeam of the 2KR buoy perpendicular to the first leg and finish with the buoy 2KR abeam and within 2 boat lengths.   The Sound Signal Starting System of Appendix Q will be used.

10     TIME LIMIT

The time limit for each race will be calculated at a minimum rhumbline speed of 3 kts for the first boat to finish. [Boats finishing more than 5 minutes per mile after the first boat that sails the course finishes will be scored DNF. This changes RRS 35.

11     PROTESTS

Protests shall be delivered to KPYC within 2 hrs after the last finishing boat docks. The protest time limit and a list of protests received will be posted on the notice board. Hearings will be held as soon as possible after racing each day in at the KPYC clubhouse

12     SCORING

Alll races will be scored individually.

13     TROPHIES

Trophies will be awarded to at the end of the season.
